Today I will tell you about a millet (not a grain) called Barnyard millet in English, Bhagar or Vari cha Tandul in Marathi, Mordhan or Sava/Samvat ke chawal in Hindi, Shyama in Bengali, Samo or Moriyo in Gujarati. They are seeds of grass.

Barnyard millet (Bhagar / Samvat ke Chawal) these are tiny, crème colour, round grains belonging to the millet family. In India, cereal grains are not consumed during fasts. Hence, Bhabar / Shyama is a popular ingredients during fast / Navratras.

Nutritionally Barnyard millet is a superior grain with good amount of macronutrients and dietary fiber. It is an important grain, which possesses good cooking and sensory qualities.

Barnyard millet / Bhagar tastes almost similar to broken rice when cooked, it is a best substitute for rice. I always recommend Bhagar/Shyama/Samo instead of rice to my clients.

You can cook Barnyard millet just like rice, you can have this with curry/dal/curd. You can also make dosa, Idli or upma from Bhagar / Samo.

Weight Loss Recipe: Bhagar Rice – Upma or Pulao
Ingredients:
• Carrot (Half) – Finely copped
• Tomato (Half)
• 1 Onion (Medium)
• Curry Leave – 4-5
• Green Chili – 1-2
• Barnyard millet / Bhagar – 50 grams
• Oil – 1 teaspoon
• Jeera & Rai – little

Keep a pan on gas stove, add 1 teaspoon oil, jeera & rai in it when hot. In few seconds jeera & rai will crackle, add curry leaves, green chilli & onion in hot pan, mix well for few secs. Now add tomato, stir the ingredients, and cover the pan with lid, allow all the ingredients to cook in steam for few secs. After 30-40 sec remove the lid & check whether the ingredients are half cooked? If yes, then add chopped carrot in pan. Now it’s time to add all masalas, add salt as per your taste, little bit of haldi powder and if you wish to add jeera powder or dhaniya powder then you can do so as per your taste. Again cover the pan with lid and allow all the ingredients to cook well. After 30-40 secs, remove the lid & check whether all the ingredients are almost cooked. Now add washed 50 grams Barnyard millet / Bhagar in pan and mix well. We have added Bhagar rice at the end, because it cooks fast. Add ¾ glass of water in pan, cover it with lid and allow to cook for another 5-6 min.

After 5-6 mins, remove the lid & check! Your Bhagar Rice Upma or Bhagar Rice Puloa is ready. Serve it hot with curry/raita/dal/curd. You can have this recipe in Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner.
